"Billy-Jean, you sure you know what you're doing?"
"Of course I do."
"Fuck, I'm going to jail aren't I? Dammit BJ, you said you'd never do this again."
"Look Fluffy, I need this okay. If I don't get the money to pay these people, I'm as good as dead."
"Stupid, stupid, this is a stupid idea, I hope you know that. I can't believe you dragged my ass out of bed at two in the freezing fucking morning, and for what? To help you plunder a liquor store. Argh, I must be out of my mind, and stop calling me fluffy."
I look up into the night sky. Not a cloud was in sight; only the beautiful twinkling stars stood sentinel as our witnesses. Oh, and what a crime we were committing. I let my gaze drop back to where BJ was grunting and snorting, my temper already burning hot under the collar. How was it possible he managed to talk me into doing stupid shit like this again? How? I glare at the back of his head, hoping for some miracle I somehow managed to get telepathy. Transmitting everything in my head directly into his would be so much faster. Then again, doing that might cause him to have a stroke.
"BJ, I'm only going to ask this once and for the sake of my sanity please answer me."
"Fluffy, I can't tell you where I borrowed the money from okay. I can't get you mixed up in this shit."
"Excuse me snippy, but if you're so concerned about my wellbeing, why am I here? Call me fluffy one more time. I dare you."
"Look, you're here for moral support that's all and Fluffy suits you. I saw you shift the other day, sporting a nice 'fluffy' winter coat there aren't we."
I ball my fists at my sides, my nails stabbing into my palms. Great, my friend was breaking an entry, and the one thing he thinks is funny, is about my fur. I was going to go to jail, become some werebear's bitch and spend the rest of my life scrubbing shit out of toilets.
"Okay, so riddle me this. Why aren't you shifting? I mean you're a weasel, you can squeeze through the vents easy enough."
"How do I get the booze out?"
"Please tell me, please BJ, that you're not breaking an entry just for booze?"
"Well, how else am I going to make money?"
Before I have a chance to voice my, 'concerns,' I hear tires squeal behind us. I spin around just in time to watch seven very tall and severely pissed off men stalking our way. I'm not sure if BJ was the one whimpering or me, but at least for the first time that night, we were on the same page. I sneak a peek in BJ's direction, his forehead shiny with sweat. The wind whispers across my nose, carrying the distinct smell of seven shifters. Seven wolf shifters.
They stop a few feet away from us, their eyes taking in every detail. I want to turn tail and run, but even I knew that was suicide. I want to do my usual, 'dammit BJ, this isn't our place,' type of thing, but call me clairvoyant or whatever, I didn't think these guys had a sense of humor. Instead, I wait for them to speak.
"Is there a reason you're trying to break into our store?"
I can't really tell which of them spoke, not even sure one of them moved their lips, so I do the smart thing and remain silent. Just a shame my friend didn't.
"Shit Ellie, this isn't our place. Sorry gentlemen, my girl here forgot our new address, been smoking too much tonight."
I want to facepalm, no I want to slam my head into the fucking brick wall, but thankfully overcome the urge. Of course, now he uses my name. I clear my throat, gasping as all of them pin me with their heated stare. This was bad, very very bad and BJ was just going to make this the last place we breathe our last breath.
"Gentlemen, I assure you, had we known this place belonged to your pack, we would not have trespassed."
The silence is deafening, my mind buzzing with any and all possibilities. Nothing was really popping out, but never hurt to be prepared. I could feel the tension rolling off them, the anger and power overwhelming and awe-inspiring at the same time. So this is what it felt like to be surrounded by bigger predators. Can be honest, not liking the feeling of almost pissing my pants. One of them moves forward, his
"Mr. BJ, you and your... friend, are herewith summoned to Lord Brayden's residence."
I don't know what shocked me more, that he called me BJ's friend or that he was using better English than us. I feel my frown form, my confusion slowly mounting into a full-scale cluster-fuck. I look over to my, friend, shrugging my shoulders haphazardly. Wasn't like we could fight them or run away, so might as well visit Lord something B. I move an inch forward, my eyes keeping all of them in my line of sight.
"So we go with you too, where ever, speak to your Lord and then you bring us right back?"
I watch them carefully, any sign this was going to turn bloody, I rather take my chances at running.
"That is not for us to decide. Lord Brayden shall decide what happens to you after your meeting with him."
BJ shuffles over to me, his breath fanning my neck in an unsexy way. I slap his face, his surprised squeal forcing a giggle out of me. I don't wait for a more forceful invitation, slowly walking over to where the seven gentlemen were waiting. BJ mumbles something as he follows my lead, but not loud enough to be heard. I climb into the car, suddenly very aware of the warm, muscular bodies pressed against me.
I feel my nerves clawing at my insides, my heart racing as I try to swallow the lump in my throat. Without thinking, I lean forward reaching into my back pocket. Two sets of hands grab my wrists. My mouth goes dry-ice, and my heart just stops beating. Tall and yummy leans down, his lips feathering across my earlobe.
"If you have any weapons, I would advise you to hand it over immediately."
I snort but nod my head. I shake my hands, breathing a sigh of relief as their hand-shackles drop away. I slowly bring my left hand into view. I want to burst out laughing as I watch them. Very carefully I let my fingers unfold and gasp in disbelief.
"Oh dear, heavens spare my life, save their lives. I only have the one gum stick."
I chuckle to myself, but quickly swallow it down as both of them growl deep in their chests. Suddenly I feel my temper puff out her chest, my lips moving on their own.
"Look Snoopy, Droopy, and Stretch, shouldn't you have searched me before we got into the car?"
Snoopy, no wait was that Droopy, looks down, his eyes shining with humor.
"Never had a target stupid enough to bring a weapon and sure as hell didn't think a little girl like you would."
"That's horribly sexist and quite idiotic of ya'll. I could be one bad ass ninja chick and use this very delicious grape gum stick to slice your throats."
I was not prepared for the laughter that filled the car, the suddenness of it scaring the crap out of me. I grab my chest, my heart restarting as they heehaw away.
"Now that you mention it. Nike, you wanna tie her down and strip search her?"
I feel my face go pale, my vision swimming. I watch Stretch, Uhm Nike, lean down, his fingers inches away from my zipper. Without thinking, my instincts kick into overdrive. I grab his hand, twist one way, while I went for his friend's eyes. Throughout the chaos, I feel the car serve but continue my frenzied attack. Doesn't take them long to subdue me, my mind haze as I watch them tie my hands together. I shake my head, my vision still blurry. Somewhere someone rumbles something, but I can't make out the words. I feel my mind clicking in and out, but no matter how hard I tried I couldn't fight the darkness away.
"Fuck, she ferral or something?"
"No, she's got wildness in her. I've seen this before when shifters live alone for too long and rely heavily on their animal. They have these blackouts where they either attack like wild animals or run."
"Like the flight or fight instinct."
"Yeah, I think when you had her cornered like that she switched off and allowed her animal to take over."
"Tell you one thing Adam, this kitty's got claws. Nike, you okay?"
"Yes, she got me on my cheek, but it's nothing. I think she was going for my eyes."
"Brilliant, attack a vulnerable spot and make your escape from there."
"Shane, just remember to tell Zach about this."
The trio fall silent, watching the woman with equal parts curiosity and suspicion.
