I really didn't want to be at this party, my parents kept making me come to this stupid events. They wanted me to get involved with the people in my social circle, I had no idea what the hell that meant, which was probably why I was hiding at a library, the last place I would actually set a foot in if the situation was different. I wanted to be with my friends or with girls, but instead I was stuck at a party with a bunch of old, stuck up people.
"Are you mad?" I jumped about a foot up in the air when I heard the little voice. I heard giggling and turned around to see a little girl sitting in the sofa with a book on her lap. She looked to be about seven and was really cute. The big glasses on her face made her look specially adorable "Don't you dance?"
"No, I don't dance. You are Erin right?" she nodded and I smiled at her. Of course, she was the hostesses's daughter "Why are you here by yourself?"
"Mommy doesn't like when I intervene on her parties, so she left me with my nanny" that just made my heart hurt, it reminded me a lot of my parents, except that they always wanted to show me off, like I was some kind of stallion or something "My nanny fell asleep and I came here to read a book" she lowered her voice and said in a whisper "but don't tell anyone, I'm not supposed to be here"
"Don't worry, it'll be our secret" she smiled and looked down at her book. I moved closer and sat beside her "What are you reading?"
"Peter Pan" she lifted the book so I could see it "Is about a boy that doesn't want to grow up"
"Wow, that's pretty cool" she was so sweet, I felt my heart melt "I bet he goes on an awesome adventure"
"He does" she said. She looked at the book and then back at me "would you like to read it?"
"I would" I took the book from her and turned it back to the first page "We can read it together"
"Ok" she was very excited about the idea and I felt bad for her. Poor child, I bet she didn't get a lot of attention.
Three years later
There was another party going on down stairs, I had hated this parties before. I had never been allowed to attend one and my mother had made me stay in my room. I had usually waited for my nanny to go to sleep and then I would sneak back downstairs and to the library. I would read stories and feel myself fly away. Sometimes I was a mermaid, sometimes a warrior and sometimes I was a girl flying through the sky and fighting pirates. Of course all that had changed three years ago, I had met someone incredible. He actually liked to spend time with me, he would always bring me a sweet and read me stories. So now this parties were the best part of the month.
I made sure no one saw me and sneak downstairs again. I had to make sure everything was clear before I sneaked into the library. I closed the door carefully and ran to one of the bookshelves. I picked the book I wanted to read tonight and then I pulled the other book out. This one was special.
The door opened and I turned around in time to see him close it behind him. He gave me the same dazzling smile he always did and walked closer.
"There you are, I thought you weren't coming to our date" He sat down on the couch and kissed my cheek before picking me up and sitting me beside him "You have put on a little weight, I can't pick you up anymore"
"I also grew two inches" I was very happy with that accomplishment.
"Wow, that's great" he ruffled my hair and looked at the book on my lap "So, what are we reading today? Oh, I see, Matilda. Good choice"
He opened the book, but I stopped him before he could start reading. I grabbed the Peter Pan book, it was the one he had read me when we first met, the one that had started this friendship. I was happy that he still wanted to be my friend, after all eighteen year olds didn't want to be friends with ten year old girls.
"Happy birthday" He had told me his birthday once and I had marked it down on my calendar. I extended the Peter Pan book to him and smiled "I was going to buy you a gift, but my mom took my allowance because I was bad" he just looked at me without saying anything "I thought maybe you would want it since you told me once that this was your favorite book"
He took the book, the expression on his face hadn't changed. Maybe he thought it was a stupid gift, after all I was sure his other friends had given him better and more expensive gifts. I wanted to just take it back, but didn't know how.
"Thank you" I looked at his face when he said that. He was smiling at me and he looked very happy, maybe the book hadn't been so bad after all "This is the best gift anyone has ever given me"
"Really?" I asked.
"Yes" he hugged me and kissed the top of my head "I'll treasure it forever"
That made me happy. I was so glad he had liked my gift, even if it was just an old book. That book had started our friendship and I knew we would be friends forever.
