"You've got to be out of your mind," Noah stormed into a tent in which a monstrously strong nurse had wrangled Lena. Although Lena insisted she was fine, the nurse had her wrapped in a blanket and sitting on the edge of a cot. Any number of things could be wrong with Lena, the nurse lectured, from smoke inhalation to the scape on her shin that she didn't realize she had from when the rock slid out from under her.

Even though Lena prided herself on being quite athletic, the stocky, short nurse must have been a secret body builder or something. Knowing a losing battle when she saw one, Lena reluctantly sat down and sulked. Kira jumped onto the cot next to Lena, and before the nurse could argue, Lena said, "The dog goes, I go." Well, she croaked it. What? Her lungs were tired, and her throat felt dry and tight from all the running, the heat, and the smoke.

"Off the cot," the nurse had said gruffly. When the nurse turned, Lena stuck out her tongue and directed Kira onto the floor. The dog curled beneath her feet and stayed there, even as Noah stormed in.

"You've got to be out of your mind," Noah fumed, anger running through his veins hot as the fire consuming the mountain. "Are you a fireman? Do you have training? Your dog goes running into a wildfire, you don't chase it."

"Her," Lena corrected. Why was he so mad anyway? Like anyone else would have done differently. She bet if she was a guy, everyone would be clapping her back.

Noah ran his hand through his hair. "Not the point, Lena."

"Why are you yelling at me? Kira, guard," Lena looked down at the furball, who peered up at her inquisitively, head cocked to the side. Great. She'll run into a wildfire for strangers, but not save Lena from the mean old hulk of a fireman. "Does guard mean look cute and confused? No, it means defend."

Kira stuck her nose on Lena's hiking boot and wagged her tail. Lena returned the effectionate gesture by making a face at the pooch.

"Take this seriously, Lena. What you did was dangerous and stupid," Noah snapped.

"Mr. Hunky Fireman, you can yell at your girlfriend later, when I'm done with her. Right now, however, we're in my tent," the mean nurse interjected with her hands on her hips.

Yeah, Lena silently goaded, finally someone sticks up for me. What an interesting new ally she had all of a sudden. Maybe the nurse wasn't so mean after all. Freakishly strong, but not so mean. What she said outloud was, "He's not even my boyfriend."

Noah's eyes were smolding as he looked from Lena, to the nurse, around the tent and back to Lena. "We're not done," he warned her, before taking a step towards the exit.

Anger swirled inside her. Who did he think he was? As the anger swelled up into a billowing rage, fanned by the distance between them, she jumped to her feet, "What's your problem? I did a good thing. Those people would have-." She tried to suck in air and ended up keeled over, coughing. Both Noah and the nurse had an arm around her, guiding her back to the cot. Noah's eyes were worried, as the nurse chanted, "Okay. It's okay. We're going to take care of you. Just lie back now, hun."

Why wasn't the nurse this soothing a couple minutes ago?

"You're not indestructible, Lena, that's the problem," Noah whispered over her, before the nurse threatened to forcibly remove him from the tent.

Alert and worried, Kira snuck back onto the cot, snuggling against her human companion. If the nurse saw this time, she didn't say anything.
